The shooting that triggered a major police operation in Osby on Sunday took place during a belated New Year's Eve celebration, P4 Kristianstad reports.

At noon on Sunday, police were alerted to an elderly man opening fire from a villa in Osby, Skåne. Nearby residents were evacuated and people in the area were urged to stay indoors.

It later emerged that a black powder weapon had been used. The weapon was loaded only with gunpowder and had no bullets, a police spokesperson told local radio.

The man first tried to shoot on New Year's Eve, but failed. On Sunday, he made another attempt; police said the weapon could ignite if gunpowder remained in it.

After the incident, the man is suspected of violating the Weapons Act. The black powder weapon does not require a license, but the police found another weapon in the house for which the man does not have a license.
