He scored his first national team goal in his old home arena in Ängelholm. In front of family and friends in the stands. Fantastic. I thought I heard an extra cheer when my name was read out, says Tre Kronor forward Simon Ryfors, 28, after the 3-1 victory against the Czech Republic.

It was no exaggeration.

Although he was born in Stockholm and raised in Kungsbacka, Ängelholm is home. He came to Rögle as a junior and the 28-year-old has played six A-team seasons at the club.

It was heard in the huge cheers when his name was read out as the scorer of the 1-0 goal.

A header into Czech goalkeeper Josef Korenar's right cross.

"It was a little extra, fantastic to play in Catena again. Now I don't play in Sweden so it's easier for the family to come here and I had a lot of friends who were here watching," says the Davos forward.

Chasing a World Cup spot

Tre Kronor had a tough season in the Euro Hockey Tour last year with many losses. So winning right at the start of the national team season means a lot.

It's very important. We've had a really good week here with the whole gang, good training and a nice atmosphere and jargon among the guys. It's boosted when you get the win. Especially after last season which wasn't super successful.

For Ryfors and the other European-based players, the Olympics are a real long shot since the NHL players are coming. However, the World Cup is being played in his new home country of Switzerland.

The Olympics are a bit far away, the World Cup is also super difficult. You have to take one match and one tournament at a time. But I guess there is a place in the World Cup to fight for and I would be stupid if I didn't want to. But there are a lot of good players, says Ryfors, who has never played in a World Cup.

“Enjoyed a little extra”

Ryfors left Rögle after the SM final loss to Skellefteå in 2024 and moved to Davos. This summer he extended his contract until 2028.

But he gives Rögle fans hope.

I'm not closing any doors, they should know that I enjoyed playing here a little extra again.
