Another person has died on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife after being pulled into the sea by sudden giant waves.

The death toll from Sunday's incident has now risen to four, Spanish broadcaster RTVE reports. A search operation is underway for a fifth missing person.

The woman, confirmed dead on Monday, was taken to hospital after being pulled from the water in cardiac arrest.

The other victims, a 55-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man and another man whose age has not been confirmed, were found dead on Sunday afternoon, shortly after being hit by waves in a sea pool in Los Gigantes on the island's west coast. According to Spanish media, authorities had warned of rough seas and urged caution along the west and north coasts in the days before.

As recently as November, three more people died in giant waves elsewhere in Tenerife, which is part of the Canary Islands archipelago.

No Swedes are among those affected, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
