The death toll after the recent days' heavy rainfall and flooding in Mexico is being written up. At least 64 people have been killed and a further 65 are missing, according to local authorities.

Large parts of the country have been affected by the rain. The situation is worst in the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo and Puebla.

Flooded rivers have swept away entire villages and caused landslides that have taken roads and bridges with them.

Over 10,000 soldiers have been deployed to assist with rescue efforts and distribute emergency aid.

Mexico has been hit by several unusually powerful rainstorms this year and in the capital Mexico City, the rainfall has been historically large.
