Two elderly people have been found dead in their home south of Lisbon, Portugal, after heavy rains caused flooding in the area where they lived.

The couple appear to have been unable to move quickly enough when the water rose in their home, Portuguese media report. However, the exact causes of death are being investigated.

The area where they lived, Seixal in the Setubal region, was hit hard by storm Claudia and the heavy rains the storm brought with it.

In Setubal, nearly 1,000 storm-related incidents – including flooding, fallen trees and blocked roads – have been registered by the civil protection agency. Around 20,000 consumers are reported to be without power.
