The exact species of the whale carcass lying in the water about 75 meters off the island's coast has not been determined. Morten Abildstrøm at the Nature Agency in Anholt believes it could be Timmy.
"Both the German and Danish researchers I have spoken to believe it is probably the humpback whale Timmy," he told DR.
Samples from the whale will be sent for analysis to researchers in both Denmark and Germany.
Timmy's fate has been an ongoing story this spring. The whale first stranded on a sandbank in northern Germany in March, and since then there have been a number of rescue attempts. In early May, the whale was released into the North Sea from a specially built barge.
