Four people, including the driver, were taken to hospital after the serious accident, which occurred at the Royal Institute of Technology in central Stockholm.
On Saturday, two people are still being treated in hospital, one with serious but not life-threatening injuries and one with moderate injuries, writes Region Stockholm.
According to police, determining the identities of the dead could take several days.
The deceased have not yet been identified, says police spokesperson Ola Österling.
The driver was arrested
The driver was arrested and detained on suspicion of causing death and causing bodily harm.
"Based on what has emerged during the investigation and after questioning the arrested man together with the appointed defense attorney, there are no reasons to keep the man in custody any longer. Although certain investigative measures remain, I have decided to lift the arrest and release the man," says Deputy Prosecutor Robert Slottenberg in a press release.
The man's lawyer, Anna Björklund, participated in the interrogation but was silent afterwards.
"I can't comment on anything," she tells TT.
Was going on a break
Many people were in the busy area when the bus, a double-decker that was not in service and therefore had no passengers on board, drove into one of the bus shelters on Valhallavägen just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
SL states to Sveriges Radio that the accident bus, which operated on the Stockholm–Vaxholm route, was inspected and approved for traffic.
According to Stefan Johansson, press officer at Transdev, which operates the route for SL, the driver is experienced, with many years in the industry.
He was going on a break, says Johansson.
Crisis support
Crisis support workers from the City of Stockholm and the Red Cross, as well as staff from the church, will be on site in the nearby Engelbrekt Church parish hall on Saturday.
The Swedish Accident Investigation Board is collecting facts about the accident "within the framework of a preliminary study," acting Director General Jonas Bäckstrand tells SVT. No formal decision has been made about a full-scale accident investigation.
The bus terminal at the University of Technology, a hub for bus traffic towards Roslagen, was completely closed in connection with the accident. Traffic has since resumed early Saturday morning, according to Stockholm Local Transport (SL).
