Three people died when a bus plowed into a bus shelter in Stockholm on Friday afternoon. Identification work has been ongoing overnight and is continuing. The deceased have not yet been identified, says police spokesperson Ola Österling.

Four people, including the driver, were taken to hospital after the serious accident, which occurred at the Royal Institute of Technology in central Stockholm. The injuries for two of them were described as serious.

The driver was arrested and later held on suspicion of causing death and causing bodily harm.

The driver has been questioned and it is currently unclear what happened and what caused the accident, but there is nothing in the investigation that indicates that it was intentional in any way, says Ola Österling.

According to Österling, this assessment is based on the driver's own words as well as witness statements and available visual and film material.

Was going on a break

Many people were in the busy area when the bus, a double-decker that was not in service and therefore had no passengers on board, drove into one of the bus shelters on Valhallavägen just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

SL states to Sveriges Radio that the accident bus, which operated on the Stockholm–Vaxholm route, was inspected and approved for traffic.

According to Stefan Johansson, press officer at Transdev, which operates the route for SL, the driver is experienced, with many years in the industry.

He was going on a break, says Johansson.

Crisis support

Crisis support workers from the City of Stockholm and the Red Cross, as well as staff from the church, will be on site in the nearby Engelbrekt Church parish hall on Saturday.

The bus terminal at the University of Technology, a hub for bus traffic towards Roslagen, was completely closed in connection with the accident. Traffic has since resumed early Saturday morning, according to Stockholm Local Transport (SL).
