De la Fuente visited Las Rozas, west of the capital Madrid, where a few hundred refugees have been housed.

I am proud to be here with them, it makes us all more human, he told Spanish television channel TVE.

In Spain, around 77,000 hectares have been affected by the extensive fires outside Madrid, as well as in the neighbouring provinces of Ávila and Toledo. Evacuations have been carried out in at least 39 towns and villages.

Around 75,000 people have fled the fires. De la Fuente met with refugees, volunteers and emergency services personnel during the visit.

It is everyone's responsibility to help and encourage them in this tragic time, he said.

According to El País, the fires in Madrid and Ávila are under control.
