According to flight tracking service Flightradar 24, a number of Russian military planes have landed at Khmeimim in recent days, writes The Kyiv Independent . And Bloomberg's source close to the Russian government confirms that resources are now being flown in again, after at least a six-month hiatus.
Khmeimim and nearby Tartus are large bases that constitute Russia's only permanent military presence in the Mediterranean.
In connection with the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad last year, Russia's bases were questioned. Among others, Ukraine's intelligence service stated that "Russian forces are carrying out a hasty evacuation from Syria."
al-Assad has now been granted asylum in Moscow, but the new Islamist regime seems to want to mend relations with Russia. Syria's new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa recently had a summit with President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital.
