The leak came to light after a database containing the material was uploaded to the internet on Wednesday. The Washington Post said it had verified the material’s authenticity with the help of department officials.
Personnel from, among others, immigration agency ICE and border agency CBP - both of which fall under the department - are said to be included in the data. Information about job duties and technical equipment is also said to be included in the material.
The Department of Homeland Security is “aware of a potential breach and is actively working to deal with the situation quickly and effectively,” a spokesperson said, according to the BBC.
