Danish customers are opting out of American wines. Three of the largest food chains have started labeling European products and now the sale of American wine is plummeting. I'm not buying any American now, says Karin Pedersen Peyn.

Danish customers wanted markings on European products and the Salling group responded. The group, which owns Bilka, Netto, and Føtex, has had since February a small black star next to each product that is from Europe.

Two months later, the sale of American wines has decreased by between 15 and 20 percent, reports Salling group to TT.

Buying nothing from the USA

In a Netto store in Copenhagen, Karin Pedersen Peyn pulls her shopping cart between the shelves. Since the president entered the White House again, it has been an obvious choice to opt out of American products.

I'm not buying anything American now. I don't understand how Americans voted for Trump. He wants to have the whole world in his hand, says Karin, forming her hands demonstratively into a bowl.

About a kilometer away is the hypermarket Bilka, which is also full of markings. Mads Mielow chooses to shop according to which products have the black stars.

It helps us consumers. It makes us know what we contribute to and that we avoid seeking information on our own, says Mads Mielow.

He is one of those who has stopped buying wine from the USA.

I absolutely do not want to buy American wines. It will be French or Italian if I'm going to buy, he says.

Wanting to decide oneself

People continue to stream into the hypermarket in the Danish capital. Helle Jakobsen walks past the wine shelves and looks at a Spanish wine. On the plastic-wrapped label, a Spanish flag and a black star are visible.

I buy mostly products with European origin, but I don't actively choose to avoid any other products, says Helle Jakobsen.

Helle has nothing against the markings on European products as long as each person gets to decide for themselves.

It would be wrong to remove the American products. I don't want them to start deciding what I should shop for and not shop for, says Helle Jakobsen.
