Danish MP Karsten Hønge Targeted in Russian Propaganda Effort

The Danish MP Karsten Hønge (SF) has been exploited in a "Russian influence operation", writes Denmark's military intelligence service (FE) in a press release. The first thing I thought was that Putin is a stupid pig, says Hønge.

In a post from January, where Hønge appeared as the sender, it was stated, among other things, that "Denmark cannot accept that Greenland breaks away" and that "Denmark must ask Russia for help to avoid Greenland becoming part of the USA".

According to FE, the post was spread on social media with the aim of creating division between the transatlantic countries and undermining Western support for Ukraine.

"The purpose was, by all accounts, to exploit the public debate about Greenland to worsen the relationship between Denmark and the USA", writes FE.

The Danish authorities assess that it is less likely that the false post was an attempt to influence the election held on Greenland in March.

The post originally comes from an influence actor who has previously promoted Russia's view on the war in Ukraine.

According to the French authority Viginum, which works against disinformation, the actor is part of an influence network working for the Russian state.
