The European Championships will be held in Birmingham in mid-August and Ståhl showed at Saturday's Swedish Championships that the form is there.

He decided the competition with his first throw, a 67.12. In the third round he improved that to 67.23 and in the final round he really hit the target.

His 69.85 is a new season best by 25 centimetres.

"It was incredibly nice to finish the competition so well. I tried to find the rhythm and feeling at the start of the competition and I felt that I had a lot of recoil in my body, fairly long movements but not much feeling," Ståhl says.

More relaxed

A conversation with his coach Staffan Jönsson during the competition made everything go smoothly. The recipe was to be more relaxed and thereby create more speed.

Then everything fell into place immediately, says Ståhl.

Sweden's second European discus thrower Vanessa Kamga also showed that she is on her way to top form. In her final throw of the day, Kamga hit a whopping 64.26 metres, her second-best result of the year and only a metre shorter than what she produced in the Diamond League competition in London recently.

The result is a new Swedish Championship record, something that pleased her.

"I'm very happy with my last throw. I think it feels super stable," says Kamga.

Succeed in front of friends

She was also happy to succeed in front of many friends. Kamga competes for Hässelby today, but has previously competed for Upsala IF.

I don't live too far from the stadium. To be able to do it with my loved ones here in the stands, it means everything. I've had a lot of people come to cheer me on here today so it really means everything, says Kamga.
