Daniel Kindberg Joins Ukrainian Army Amid Legal Battle

From football in Östersund to war-torn Ukraine the step may seem long. But not for ÖFK's former chairman Daniel Kindberg. The suspected former football leader serves in Ukraine's army, writes Svenska Dagbladet.

On September 22, the trial against Daniel Kindberg begins in the Court of Appeal in Sundsvall. It concerns criminal charges such as gross bribery, aiding and abetting gross accounting offenses and aiding and abetting gross obstruction of tax control. This in his role as CEO of the housing company Östersundshem during the 2010s.

A total judicial murder, he says to Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

As chairman of Östersunds FK, he led the football club to successes in the European Championship 2017–2018. When he was suspected of economic crime in 2018, he took a break as chairman of ÖFK, and later left the assignment.

Since May, Kindberg, who has worked in the Defense Forces for many years and has the rank of lieutenant colonel, has been in Ukraine. There, he was first group leader in an international legion focused on special missions.

It was a suicide mission, says Kindberg.

Nowadays, he has administrative tasks within the third army corps. Kindberg says that the reason he went to Ukraine was his children.

I am a relatively old guy. For me, this struggle must be decided here and now. If we do not win, then it is our children and grandchildren who must settle it. I will not stand for that, he says to SvD.

I am here because I believe that we can win. And Ukraine must win. There is no alternative.
