Bäckström took over the role in 2022 but has failed to take the U21 national team to any championships since then. It is now clear that this autumn's European Championship qualifiers in late September-October will be his last.
"We have had a very good collaboration with Daniel, even though the results were not exactly as we had hoped," says national team manager Kim Källström.
Bäckström was also captain of the men's national team during the January tour in 2024.
"I am proud to have been assigned to represent the U21 national team in this role," says Bäckström in a press release.
