“For many, the Dala horse and meatballs are the first things they associate with Sweden. It is a strong symbol. The protection means that people want to protect a tradition and the know-how passed down between generations,” says Monika Nowicka, a departmental lawyer at the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV), in a press release.
Among other things, the protection covers the unauthorised commercial use of the name and misleading information about its origin. It applies throughout the EU, including to online sales.
The application was filed by Grannas and Nils Olsson Dalahästar, but this does not mean they have exclusive rights to the designation. All producers who meet the requirements have the right to use it.
