It was a few kilometers from the finish line that the accident occurred. Johannessen took a sharp right turn and cycled into Pogačar's front tire, whereupon the Slovenian fell and slid a few meters on the asphalt.
Pogačar got away with scrapes and was able to complete the race, but afterwards the emotions boiled over in some people on social media.
"I wish I could have done it over and done it differently, but I cannot. It feels crap. But I would not wish the amount of threats I get in my inbox on anyone", Johannessen writes on X and continues:
"I am terribly sorry but also frightened by the hate from all people. This feels very scary”.
After hearing about the threats, Johannessen received support from Pogačar himself.
I hope people stop giving you crap. All is well, it was an accident. We continue to fight, says the Slovenian in a video according to The Guardian.
After Wednesday's stage, Tadej Pogačar is found in second place in the overall standings, while Tobias Johannessen is tenth.
