The fuel shortage was announced Sunday in a notice to airlines flying to Cuba, sources told the AP, and will primarily affect long-haul flights from Russia and Canada. Air Canada became the first major carrier to announce it was halting flights to the island.
The shortage has been blamed on U.S. sanctions, which have caused an energy crisis in the authoritarian country. Over the weekend, crisis measures such as a four-day workweek for staff at state-owned companies were introduced.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened punitive tariffs against countries that supply Cuba with oil, and specifically called on Mexico to cease its oil exports to Cuba.
