This is the fourth time this year that the island has suffered a major power outage and the ninth nationwide blackout since the end of 2024.

"A total collapse of the national electricity system occurred at 4:30 p.m. local time," electricity company UNE wrote on X.

UNE did not immediately provide an explanation for the latest power outage.

A shortage of oil in the country has previously been one of the reasons for the recurring outages in the country's fuel-fired power plants. The oil shortage has worsened since the US decided to stop oil deliveries to Cuba.
