The Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) describes the decrease in the proportion of students taking out student loans as a trend break.
It was the first time since 2011 that it decreased. It has been increasing successively year by year since 2011, says Carl-Johan Stolt, analyst at CSN.
However, the total number of students with student aid increased. And three out of four still utilized the loan portion of the student aid in 2024, which means that the number of those borrowing increased by almost 7,000 people to 397,520 compared to the previous year. A total of 24.7 billion kronor was paid out.
Why more people are still choosing to opt out of the loan portion has not yet been analyzed more deeply.
A guess is that the inflation rate has decreased, which means that a slightly lower proportion needs to take out loans, says Stolt.
