A cryptocurrency exchange claims to have been subjected to a sophisticated data breach, resulting in approximately 1.5 billion dollars in the cryptocurrency Ethereum disappearing.
Bybit, the exchange affected, claims that someone from the outside managed to manipulate a routine transfer of Ethereum between accounts. Now, cryptocurrency values equivalent to over 15 billion Swedish kronor are gone, sent to an unknown recipient.
The "theft" has made Bybit's customers anxious, and some of them have asked to get their money back. Bybit's CEO Ben Zhou claims that they do not need to be anxious.
We can cover what was lost, he says.
Theft of cryptocurrencies is said to be a popular activity for hackers, and in recent years, hackers in the service of the North Korean state have been particularly active in the area. In November, the American FBI and the Japanese police pointed out North Korean hackers for having stolen over 300 million dollars from a cryptocurrency company in Japan.
