Drakulic was one of the first writers to bring feminist issues into the public debate in the former communist Yugoslavia.

Her internationally recognized books include the essay collections "How We Managed to Survive Communism and Even Laughed" and "Balkan Express".

She wrote a large number of novels and essay collections that have been translated into over 20 languages. In many of her works, she focused on the fate of women, the fall of communism and the rise of nationalism, but also on aging, illness and the fear of death.

Drakulic lived and worked for long periods in Croatia, Sweden and Austria. She was married to the Swedish journalist and author Richard Swartz.
