Criticism of Danish AI envoy to the EU over Siemens ties

The Dane was appointed last week as a special adviser on AI issues to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Digitization Commissioner Henna Virkkunen.

However, the fact that the 60-year-old is chairman of Siemens' board has raised questions about his neutrality.

Around 40 MEPs are now demanding that the Commission be transparent about how the appointment was made and how any conflict of interest will be avoided.

“What safeguards . . . will prevent privileged access to and undue influence on EU AI policy by a single industrial actor?” asks Italian MEP Brando Benifei, among others, in a letter to the Commission.
