It was in the penalty shootout of the Champions League round of 16 between Real and Atlético that the drama unfolded.
Julián Álvarez slipped when he shot Atlético's second penalty into the goal. After VAR review, the goal was disallowed because Álvarez had also touched the ball with his supporting foot.
The referee said that when Julián reached the penalty spot, he touched the ball with his supporting foot, but the ball didn't move, says Diego Simeone.
To journalists on site, the Argentine shouted:
Put up your hand, anyone who saw Julián touch the ball twice. Who put up their hand? Nobody put up their hand.
The European Football Association (Uefa) now announces in a statement that the referee made the right decision in disallowing the goal, after Atlético Madrid asked the association about the incident.
At the same time, Uefa will start discussions with the International Football Association (Fifa) and Ifab about whether the rule needs to be reviewed, in cases where a double touch is unintentional.
Atlético, who have lost two Champions League finals to "big brother" Real, won the return match at home on Metropolitano 1–0 to force extra time and penalties.
Álvarez was responsible for one of two penalty misses for Atlético, while Real missed one. "Los blancos" will now face Arsenal in the quarterfinal.
