There are currently over 500 blood bags missing in the Västra Götaland region. The healthcare system is now appealing for help.
"The situation is serious and we need to act now and get blood donors' help to secure blood supplies before Christmas," says chief physician Anna Wiberg in a press release.
"If there is not enough blood, we may be forced to cancel operations. We want to avoid that as much as possible."
According to Ulrika Ljung, press contact at Geblod, other regions also have an extra need for blood in December.
We always need extra blood supplies before Christmas, especially this Christmas when several red days fall on weekdays when the blood donation center is closed, she says.
- We can see that Skåne also has critically low stocks, while we have stable blood stocks elsewhere. But before Christmas, we need help to replenish extra supplies throughout Sweden.
