The European Commission promises more earmarked money for agriculture in the next long-term budget.

The proposal from President Ursula von der Leyen was put forward this weekend and involves the introduction of a "rural target", reports the news sites Euractiv and Politico Europe, among others.

The hope is to thereby put an end to growing dissatisfaction in the EU Parliament.

"We have clarified and strengthened our goals in three key areas: securing the role of the regions, strengthening the identity of agricultural policy and improving governance," von der Leyen writes on X after participating in an extraordinary crisis meeting on Monday with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, representing the EU countries.

Heavy parts of the EU Parliament have threatened to demand a completely new budget proposal, in dissatisfaction with reduced subsidies for agriculture and regional support.
