The proposal from President Ursula von der Leyen was presented this weekend and involves the introduction of a "rural target", reports news sites Euractiv and Politico Europe, among others. The hope is to put an end to the dissatisfaction in the EU Parliament that otherwise risks greatly complicating the already complicated budget process.
On Monday, an extraordinary crisis meeting on the budget will be held between von der Leyen, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, representing the EU countries.
Heavy parts of the EU Parliament have threatened to demand a completely new budget proposal, in dissatisfaction with reduced subsidies for agriculture and regional support.
