The stricter criminal record requirements that the Riksdag decided on Monday will come into force on July 13. They mean that a foreigner's criminal record will be weighed more heavily than it is today in decisions about granting and revoking residence permits.

The acts that can lead to denial of a residence permit are not explicitly listed in the text of the law, but government representatives and investigators have cited examples such as not following laws and regulations, ignoring authority decisions, systematically failing to pay debts or fines, and working illegally.

The Left Party and the Green Party voted against the proposal.
