Since Wednesday, approximately 5,000 residents and tourists have had to be evacuated due to the fire, which has affected the southwestern parts of the island.

Around 230 firefighters and six helicopters are still working at full capacity to extinguish the fire in areas near the town of Ierapetra. Swedish Ia Löfquist lives in the town and the concern over the fire has made it difficult to sleep the past few nights.

"It feels hopeful, even if we cannot relax yet, the danger is not completely over", she writes to TT on Friday morning.

From Turkey, Minister of Agriculture Ibrahim Yumakli announces that the rescue service has gained control over a large wildfire near the holiday resort of Cesme in Izmir. Two other large fires are still raging in the province.

The Turkish rescue service has been fighting against more than 600 fires in the country over the past week.
