Country Joe McDonald - or Joseph Allen McDonald, as he was actually called - was best known as the founder and lead singer of the folk rock group Country Joe and the Fish. He wrote the group's song "I-feel-like-I'm-fixin'-to-die rag," which became a prominent protest song during the Vietnam War.

He described the song as "punk rock before punk even existed" for The New York Times in 2017.

Country Joe McDonald, who released more than 30 albums during a long career that began in the early 1960s, died Saturday from complications of Parkinson's disease, his wife and band said in a statement to The New York Times and Rolling Stone. He was 84.
