Malaysia and Indonesia are blocking Grok, the AI chatbot from Elon Musk's company xAI, after the countries said the chatbot had been misused to create sexually explicit images.

A storm of criticism has recently been directed at Grok, which can be used via Musk's X platform, after images with sexual content were generated - including some depicting children.

The government sees sexual deepfakes created without consent as a serious violation of human rights, dignity and the safety of citizens in the digital space, Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Digitalization Meutya Hafid said on Saturday.

Both Indonesia and Malaysia are now blocking access to Grok, with Malaysia's Communications Authority saying access will remain blocked until effective safeguards are in place.
