Cornell Bans Fraternity Parties for Rest of Academic Year After Alleged Gang Rape

Male student fraternities at elite Cornell University are banned from holding parties and other social events for the rest of the academic year, the university has decided following a suspected gang rape.

“These measures will pave the way for a fundamental review of how men’s fraternities operate and whether they can continue operating safely,” Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff said in a statement.

The action comes after a woman accused seven men of raping her in a student union dormitory on the campus in Ithaca, New York, in 2024. All of the accused deny the charges.

Cornell has been heavily criticized for its handling of the case. The woman reported the incident to campus police, but no charges were filed. She is now pursuing civil lawsuits against the university and the men.
