"It's a big win for the climate when we recycle diapers instead of burning them. There are many small children in Copenhagen, so the potential is great," says Line Barfod at the municipality's technology and environmental administration.

The City of Copenhagen has, along with Frederiksberg Municipality, signed an agreement with the Danish company Verdis for a recycling plant that is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

In 2022, the City of Copenhagen conducted a pilot project that showed that Copenhageners are good at sorting diapers. Old diapers are already placed in a tied-up bag, and the only thing missing is a special waste container for diapers.

Waste containers will be available in connection with properties where at least six children who use diapers live. Those living in a villa will be able to get their own waste container.

The municipality's technology and environmental administration expects to be able to collect 5,000 tons of diapers for recycling when the project is fully implemented in 2029.
