For several years, the municipality of Copenhagen has charged a fee to couples marrying in municipally run venues, such as City Hall. But that should not be the case, the municipality's lawyers have concluded after reviewing relevant legal texts, Ekstra Bladet reports.
After reviewing approximately 53,000 cases, around 900,000 Danish kroner has been paid back so far, the municipality tells the newspaper.
However, the final amount could be significantly higher. This summer, Ekstra Bladet reported that foreign couples will also receive refunds and that the total could be up to 23 million Danish kroner.
