The activists will continue east until they break Israel's blockade against Gaza, according to the organizers. They are now in Libya since they crossed the border from Tunisia on Tuesday.

The convoy goes under the name "Soumoud", Arabic for "unshakeability". They left the Tunisian capital Tunis on Monday morning.

In total, hundreds of people are participating, distributed in 14 buses and around a hundred other vehicles, says spokesperson Ghassen Henchiri to the radio station Mosaique FM. The activists – among them lawyers and healthcare workers – come mainly from different countries in North Africa.

The journey through Libya is expected to take three to four days. After that, the plan is to cross the border to Egypt – and from there continue to Rafah in southern Gaza Strip.

In contrast to the activist ship Madleen, which was stopped by Israel in international waters, the convoy is not transporting any humanitarian aid to Gaza. The journey instead constitutes a "symbolic act", according to the organizers.
