A 65-year-old man was shot to death with six shots to the upper body on January 29 this year, inside the business premises he ran in Husby in northern Stockholm.
Police officers were nearby when the shots rang out, and together with another man in the room, one of them gave chase to the fleeing shooter.
Exchange of shots
During the trial, the police testified about how the shooter, while fleeing, turned around and aimed a gun at him.
"He was therefore forced to use his service weapon and shoot at the person. He also threw himself aside so as not to be hit by the shot that the person fired. He does not know which of them shot first," the police told the court according to the verdict in Solna District Court.
Shortly afterwards, the same police officer was able to arrest the man, as the 34-year-old ran into a dead end. The police had to fire another shot, a warning shot into the ground, to get the man to lie down, according to the testimony the police gave in court.
The 34-year-old is now sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and attempted murder of the police officer and the other man who was nearby.
Relative of gang criminal
The man who was shot to death was a relative of a leading figure in the criminal gang scene. However, no motive for the murder has been established in the investigation.
During the trial, the 34-year-old has denied the crime, but earlier in the investigation he has provided various information that he has since backed down from, including that he was instructed through encrypted chats to carry out the act in exchange for payment. In connection with his arrest, the man is also said to have stated that he had been forced to carry out the murder, according to the police who arrested him.
The man must pay damages to the murdered man's relatives, 130,000 kronor to two different people - and 200,000 kronor each to the police and the other man who, according to the verdict, was subjected to attempted murder.
