The midfielder hung up his football boots on the shelf in March 2023 after an unsuccessful stint in Istanbul Basaksehir, but he is now taking a place in politics in Turkey, reports news agency AFP.

At Sunday's congress in Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdogan was also re-elected for the ninth time as party leader for AKP, which has ruled the country since 2002.

The German-born Mesut Özil, 36, was part of the team that won the World Championship gold with Germany in 2014, but after the 2018 World Championship, he chose to quit the national team in protest.

This was after the political storm that erupted in Germany since he posed for pictures with Erdogan.

"When high-ranking representatives of the German Football Association treat me as they have, it shows a lack of respect for my Turkish roots and selfishly turns me into political propaganda, that's enough", he wrote in connection with the decision.

When Özil got married the following year, Erdogan was the best man at the wedding.

During his playing career, he represented, among others, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, and Arsenal.
