The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.7 percent on Friday, the S&P 500 index fell 1.7 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 2.2 percent.
For the S&P 500, Friday's close was the worst weekly result since the outbreak of war in Iran on February 28.
Events at the largely closed Strait of Hormuz have worried investors and kept oil prices high. On Friday evening, North Sea crude hovered around $113 a barrel.
