Interest in contemporary circus has increased in Sweden. According to a new report from Riksteatern, the number of circus performances has more than tripled over the past three years, and the number of visitors has increased by 159 percent during the period.
During a three-year period, a total of 434 circus performances were held, which corresponds to an increase of 228 percent compared to 2021. During the same period, the number of visitors rose from 12,000 to 31,000, according to the report.
"There is an enormous demand for circus, and now we see how the art form has taken a natural place in Swedish performing arts", says artistic development manager Magali Bancel in a press release.
