On Sunday, narcotics police inspected a fruit container in the port city of Machala. The cargo contained not only fruit, but also two tons of cocaine, divided into more than 2,000 plastic-wrapped packages.
The container was on its way to Sweden, according to the country's Interior Minister John Reimberg.
If the cargo had reached Sweden, it would, according to Expressen, have been one of the largest known shipments ever smuggled in.
In recent years, cocaine seizures have risen sharply, and Sweden is now seen as a transit country for smuggling from South America to Europe. Last year, police found around 200 kilos of cocaine in an apartment in Malmö a few days after a truck driver picked up a banana container with at least 1,200 kilos of cocaine at the port of Helsingborg.
