The 36-year-old and his lawyers also claim to have new evidence to present. A trial is scheduled for May.

The appeal comes shortly after McGregor signaled that he will run in the presidential election in Ireland.

"Ireland, the election is yours and it's a simple choice. Vote for me as your president and we'll save Ireland together!", McGregor wrote on social media on Thursday.

The presidential post in Ireland is a ceremonial position without any executive power.

The election will be held no later than November 15, and the president is elected by elected politicians in parliament and various authorities.
