Växjö Bus Crash: Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Causing Death and Injuries

A young man died and many people were injured when a bus ran off the road outside Växjö on Monday. The prosecutor said negligence may have played a role in the accident, and the driver has been arrested. The three people who were previously in intensive care have been moved to regular hospital wards.

There are circumstances surrounding the incident that we need to investigate, says prosecutor Tommy Sköld.

The driver, who is in his 60s, has so far only been questioned briefly. He is suspected on probable cause of causing death, causing bodily harm and reckless driving.

Defense attorney Torgny Dahlberg does not want to comment on the driver's attitude towards the suspicions.

The prosecutor emphasizes that there may be explanations other than negligence, such as an acute illness. The driver will not be questioned in greater depth until Wednesday.

Many interviews

Blood samples have been taken, but the prosecutor is unsure whether the results of all the tests are available and therefore cannot comment on possible influence by drugs or alcohol.

Extensive work now lies ahead, including a technical examination of the bus and interviews with the driver and passengers.

The accident occurred between Växjö and Alvesta on Monday afternoon, when a double-decker bus overturned on Highway 25.

46 injured

"The number of injured people will be reported during the day. Preliminary figures are 46 injured and one dead," the police write.

According to Region Kronoberg (regional health authority), around ten people are being treated in hospitals in the region. The three people who were previously in intensive care have now been moved to regular hospital wards.

Four more people have been taken to hospitals in other regions, at least two of them with serious injuries.

The bus had no known technical faults, according to operator Connect Bus.

There are no indications of that, says the company's chief operating officer, Andreas Ehrenborg, to Expressen.

The bus had recently been inspected, according to the operator.

It has been checked like all buses. The last inspection was without any complaints. So we have all that information under control, says Ehrenborg.
