Congo’s Joseph Kabila Joins Forces With M23 Rebel Group, Will Lead New Movement

Joseph Kabila has joined forces with the M23 rebel group and will lead a new movement in Congo-Kinshasa, the parties said at a joint press conference.

The former president of Congo-Kinshasa was sentenced to death in absentia last year for high treason and was also accused of collaborating with Rwanda and the M23 rebel group, which is active in eastern Congo-Kinshasa.

He denied the charges at the time, but is now openly cooperating with the group, which controls large parts of eastern Congo-Kinshasa. Kabila led the country for almost 20 years but lost the 2019 election. Reports of links to M23 emerged after he left office.

The leaders of Congo-Kinshasa and M23 signed a US-brokered peace agreement with Donald Trump late last year, but fighting has continued. In August, the parties were reported to have agreed on a roadmap for new peace talks.
