Congo Says Former President Kabila Is Planning Large-Scale Attack With M23 Rebels

The government of Congo-Kinshasa says former President Joseph Kabila is planning “a large-scale attack” and has allied himself with the M23 rebel movement, which is fighting in the east of the country. M23 is backed by neighboring Rwanda.

The statement from the government in Kinshasa on Friday evening came in an interview with the AFP news agency. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said that Kabila “has decided to formalize a large-scale attack” and is ready to take up arms to overthrow the government.

Kabila was sentenced to death in absentia in Congo-Kinshasa a year ago for collaborating with the M23 militant movement.

Kabila, in turn, announced on Monday that he was officially joining forces with M23 under a new umbrella organization that will "end tyranny" in Congo.
