According to the statement, 2,011 cases have been reported, of which 753 have been fatal.

The new figures show that the largest spread of the infection is occurring in Ituri province, while in South Kivu no cases have been registered for 47 days.

WHO's head of emergencies, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said on Monday that the organisation's analyses indicate that "the scale of the outbreak is at least two to four times larger than the number of cases we have identified."

The outbreak in Congo-Kinshasa began in May and has affected four provinces. The current outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment. The mortality rate is approximately 37.5 percent.
