It is not clear whether Infantino, president of the International Football Association Board (FIFA), was present at any of the matches, but on his Instagram account there is an edited video in which the Swiss man hugs and greets more than 20 people at the tourist resort of Punta Cana.

"I spent valuable time with friends, colleagues and the president of FIFA member associations," Infantino wrote in his post.

On Friday, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani sent a letter to Infantino urging him to stay away, Sky News reports.

His possible presence would put the youth tournament in the spotlight as the media would focus on the crisis within FIFA following Infantino's now-scrapped plans to sell shares of the commercial rights to the World Cup to private investors, Montagliani says.

Canadian Montagliani has been mentioned as a possible opponent to Infantino in the presidential election at the FIFA Congress in March.
