This fall's World Cup qualifiers were not a happy story – neither for Sweden nor Slovenia.
While Blågult collapsed, the Slovenians also lost their grip, and in the end it was Kosovo who snatched second place behind Switzerland.
The Slovenian Football Association has now announced that it has chosen to part ways with national team captain Matjaz Kek - a decision that stems from the failed World Cup qualifiers, where Slovenia only managed four points.
Kek took over the national team in 2018 and led it to one of its greatest successes in modern times: Euro 2024. There, Slovenia advanced from the group stage and gave Portugal a proper match in the round of 16.
It was Kek's second time leading the country to a major championship. During his first term as national team coach, from 2007 to 2011, Slovenia reached the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
