Colorful buildings, imaginative sculptures and crowds of visitors dressed in furs herald the opening of the great ice and snow festival in Harbin, China.

The event annually attracts prominent ice sculptors to create highly advanced sculptures in the hopes of winning the first prize in the prestigious sculpture competition.

The festival runs until mid-February in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province in northeastern China.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected, despite temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
