Petro spoke before the UN General Assembly on Tuesday night Swedish time. During his speech, he brought up the US attacks on three boats in the Caribbean accused of transporting narcotics.
Over a dozen people have been confirmed dead in the attacks and Petro suspects that some of them were Colombian citizens. The country is the world's largest producer of cocaine.
According to Petro, several of the people on the boats were "young people who just wanted to escape poverty".
The attacks have sparked debate because drug smuggling in itself does not carry the death penalty under American law, and Washington has not provided any concrete evidence that the targets that were attacked actually smuggled drugs.
A criminal process must be initiated against these American officials. This includes President Trump, said Petro and means that those who make the most money from drug smuggling are in the US.
Donald Trump, on his part, has waved away the criticism directed at the decisions to attack the boats.
This is a warning to every terrorist who smuggles toxic drugs into the US: We will annihilate you, he said during his speech before the General Assembly.
Colombia and the US have been allies since before, but last week the Trump administration removed Colombia's classification as "allied in the war on drugs".
