The senator who was kidnapped on Tuesday in a guerrilla-controlled area in southwestern Colombia has been released, according to the country's Defense Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

Aida Quilcue, 53, was abducted from her home in the Cauca department by defectors from the disarmed FARC guerrilla group. Both she and her two bodyguards were found just hours later and are safe, according to Sánchez.

President Gustavo Petro then warned the rebels that they would cross “a red line” if they did not release her.

During a televised government meeting, the president said that on Tuesday night he had to change the route of a helicopter flight to avoid a suspected assassination attempt.

In recent months, there have been reports of alleged plans by drug cartels to attack the president.
