According to the AP news agency, de la Espriella, who took office in August, wants to prevent cultural institutions from being taken over by “atheistic social communism.” The exhibitions that were removed concerned the country’s social movements, including the LGBTQI movement, feminism and political violence.
Activists have accused the government of censorship and have protested outside the museum in the capital, Bogotá.
Culture Minister Paola Holguín says her department is also reviewing exhibitions at other institutions.
Abelardo de la Espriella is a close ally of US President Donald Trump.
